Good news from Greece as Metropolitan Ieronymous has been named successor and the new Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church, replacing the recently deceased and highly popular Christodoulos.  God rest his soul, and God grant long life to Ieronymous.

Happy Lent

February 7, 2008

Blessings to our Roman Catholic friends on the beginning of their Lent Season.  Pope Benedict XVI comments on the period of renewal over at ZENIT.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time people have gone to the cathedral buck-naked.  It seems to be a time-honored Catalonian tradition.

The gripe?  The fur trade.  Nothing at all to do with the Church.

It took 15 years, but justice may finally be served.

Before one Judges

January 31, 2008

Think about this:

“Do not rail against anyone, but rather say, ‘God knows each one.’ Do not agree with him who slanders, do not rejoice at his slander and do not hate him who slanders his neighbor. This is what it means not to judge. Do not have hostile feelings towards anyone and do not let dislike dominate your heart; do not hate him who hates his neighbor. This is what peace is: Encourage yourself with this thought, ‘Affliction lasts but a short time, while peace is for ever, by the grace of God the Word.

St. Moses the Ethiopian

Pope Gig 2008

January 31, 2008

The New York Sun publishes the Pontiff’s itinerary.

Too bad. The Russian Patriarch should not waste time in taking a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI. Alexei II blew a tremendous opportunity to meet with John Paul II in order to begin the mending process between the two churches, and pride seemed to have gotten in the way. I would hate to see that happen again.

This is in honor of my mother, who is not Catholic, but was named after the Patroness of Church Music.

Jon, this is especially for you. Perhaps one day you’ll revert, and perhaps I’ll learn to hold my tongue:

“There is more joy in heaven over a converted sinner than over a righteous person standing firm. A leader in battle has more love for a soldier who returns after fleeing, and who valiantly pursues the enemy, than for one who never turned back, but who never acted valiantly either. A farmer has greater love for land which bears bruit fully, after he has cleared it of thorns, than for land which never had thorns but which never yielded a fruitful harvest.”

St. Gregory the Great.
